Sioux Falls Man Sentenced to Federal Prison for Illegal Possession of a Firearm

SIOUX FALLS – United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell announced today that Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange has sentenced a man from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, convicted of Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person. The sentencing took place on September 29, 2025. James Daniel Lathrop, 31, was sentenced to two years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, and ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.Lathrop was indicted by a federal grand jury for Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person in April 2025.
