A federal magistrate judge in Des Moines convicted a 19-year-old Huxley man of violating the Migratory Bird Treaty Act after he intentionally struck two Canada geese with his vehicle.
According to public court records and evidence presented during a bench trial, Wyatt Christian Greenfield was driving his truck eastbound near NE 70th Avenue in Ankeny, Iowa, on March 3, 2026. Prosecutors said Greenfield accelerated and swerved into the westbound lane to strike one Canada goose, then returned to the eastbound lane and struck a second goose.
Canada geese are migratory birds protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service maintains the official list of bird species covered by the law.
Greenfield faces up to six months in prison or five years of probation, up to one year of supervised release, and a fine of up to $15,000. A sentencing date has not yet been scheduled.
