Monessen Woman Pleads Guilty to More Than $1.8 Million Bank Fraud Scheme

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – A resident of Monessen, Pennsylvania, pleaded guilty in federal court to a charge of bank fraud, United States Attorney Troy Rivetti announced today.Emily Roberts, 55, pleaded guilty to one count before United States District Judge W. Scott Hardy.In connection with the guilty plea, the Court was advised that Roberts, while providing cleaning services at the victims’ home, repeatedly stole checks from the victims’ checkbook, wrote the checks out to cash, and forged a signature on the checks before depositing the money into her own personal bank account. Roberts obtained $1,893,750 through the deposit of 636 checks during the period of January 2014 to March 2026.Judge Hardy scheduled sentencing for February 10, 2027. The law provides for a maximum total sentence of up to 30 years in prison, a fine of the greater of $1 million or twice the defendant’s gain from the offense, or both. Under the federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed is based upon the seriousness of the offense and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.Assistant United States Attorney William B. Guappone is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government.The Federal Bureau of Investigation and North Strabane Township Police Department conducted the investigation that led to the prosecution of Roberts.
