Edwardsville Man Sentenced To 24 Months’ Imprisonment For False Passport Application And Aggravated Identity Theft

SCRANTON – The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced that Jose Arturo Perez Ramirez, age 35, of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, was sentenced on January 28, 2026, to 24 months’ imprisonment by United States District Judge Julia K. Munley for making a false statement in application for a passport and aggravated identity theft.According to United States Attorney Brian D. Miller, Perez Ramirez was ordered to be removed from the United States in 2019, after he failed to appear for immigration proceedings.  In 2020, Perez Ramirez purchased the identity documents of an American citizen, obtained a U.S. Passport under that identity, and thereafter resided in the United States under the assumed identity.The U.S. Department of State, Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) investigated the case.  Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah R. Lloyd is prosecuting the case.          # # #
